The Best of the Best: How Can We Transform Web3 Gaming?

Emergent Games’ ambition is to make the best Web3 games out there, attracting some 2.7 billion gamers! We have been clear about that from the start.

We’ve asked you to forget everything you know about Web3 gaming, as we are promising to move away from the often mediocre, money-making mixed bag currently dominating the scene, to one of epic and hugely compelling decentralised experiences, with a clear ‘game first’ philosophy.

We know some gamers are sceptical about blockchain, de-fi and NFTs and we don’t blame them! Where there’s money to be made, there are developers that are poor quality at best, and nefarious at worst, looking to cash in. Some with so little gaming pedigree, you could barely call what they produce a game.

Our ambition is a lofty one and we do get asked how we are going to achieve it, especially when so few have managed to deliver games of any real distinction so far.

It comes down to one thing: our team.

Putting our money where our mouth is means we need the engine room run by the best of the best, from creative development to publishing to technology, and everything in between.

And what we’ve got is a restless team of exceptional digital creatives, who have learnt (often the hard way) through decades of experience. Combined, we’ve got more than four centuries’ worth of knowledge! And an illustrious CV which includes Wonderbook, The London Heist, Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom, Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins, Knightmare, FIFA, House of the Dead, Blood and Truth, Gran Turismo and Horizon Zero Dawn.

So here we are, committed to you, our players. And we want to tell you a bit about us, the humans behind Emergent Games, and why we’re worth your time and attention.

CEO Ian Hambleton is founder of Maze Theory and ex-CEO of Output Group, including Found Studio. Passionate and driven, he has more than 20 years’ experience running creative businesses.

He says: “What excites me about Web3’s potential is the decentralisation of ownership and rewards for game success. It brings the developer and the community even closer, allowing players to share in rewards if they wish.”

Next is Russ Harding, Chief Creative Officer, a vision holder and developer of the creative process. A specialist in technology such as AR and VR and the pioneering leader on games such as Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom, Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins, EyePet and the award-winning Wonderbook franchise, where he worked closely with J.K Rowling. As creative director on PlayStation VR Worlds, he developed The London Heist and was instrumental in kick-starting the success of PSVR.

With our first game, Resurgence, Russ is excited about “taking players into a world they’ve never experienced before. Empowering the community to own the game and the items they craft or earn, which have unique and resonant values recorded on the blockchain.”

Art Director Steven Huckle is a named Creative England Top 10 Leader, whose proudest moments include working on Knightmare at Travelling Matte, then moving to Sensible Software, a dream come true and a company he likens to Emergent Games.

Steven says with Emergent Games “I’m most excited to be at the beginning of a journey into something entirely new with gaming at its heart, that we can craft into something completely amazing! This gives me the opportunity to bring new worlds and characters to life.”

Executive Producer Leon Walters has delivered games for Sony PlayStation, EA, Sega, Perfect Entertainment, Tantalus and Warner Bros. His accomplishments include: FIFA World Cup, House of the Dead and co-founding PKR.com, which delivered a highly successful online poker game with 10 million registered users.

Leon says: “I’ve played a lot of MMOs and free-to-play games and the impermanent nature of what I was buying always bothered me. I’d often stop playing and realise how much I’d spent on items that have no value outside the game. With Resurgence that all changes. Everything is decentralised. Players are rewarded for time invested because all items exist on the blockchain.”

Penrose Tackie is Chief Commercial Officer for Emergent Games and has spent more than 20 years in various publishing roles, latterly at PlayStation where he directed the launch of fan-favourite hit games including Blood & Truth, PlayStation VR Worlds, Gran Turismo, Horizon Zero Dawn and No Man’s Sky.

With an instinctive knowledge for what players want, Penrose says: “The philosophy we have of being ‘game first’ is incredibly important. This is what will set us apart and, more crucially, will guide all of our developers to focus on what will truly make our games successful: the players and communities. I’m excited by the super-talented team we have and what their creative minds will be able to deliver for gamers.”
